Q & A with Stuart
WHAT DID YOUR PHYSIQUE LOOK LIKE BEFORE YOU GOT INTO BODYBUILDING? I was already quite a well-built guy from the age of fifteen. When I was at school, I was always the biggest guy in my year.
WHAT CHANGES DID YOU NOTICE AND HOW DID YOUR LIFE CHANGE WHEN YOU BEGAN TRAINING? There was a big change in the way people saw me. I gained a lot of respect and confidence in myself.
WERE YOUR PARENTS AND FRIENDS SUPPORTIVE OF YOUR DECISION TO PURSUE BODYBUILDING? My parents were more in favour of rugby than bodybuilding, but they still always supported me.
HAVE YOUR TRAINING PHILOSOPHY AND PRINCIPLES CHANGED SINCE YOUR EARLY DAYS? When I was younger I always used to just train heavy. Now I concentrate more on repetitions and technique. I find I get a much better feel this way.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT TRAINING ROUTINE? I train Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at present and train an extra day pre-contest. I do three sets on each muscle group. The first two sets are always the heaviest and on the last I go for reps.
WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE AND LEAST FAVOURITE BODY PARTS TO TRAIN? Arms and chest are my favourite body parts to train, and my least favourite is shoulders.

I own Core Fitness and Core Health Suite gyms. Both are in Plymouth, South-West England. I can always be contacted through the gyms.
Diet and rest are the most important factors to be a successful bodybuilder, as the growing takes place out of the gym not in the gym.
Supplements are important as they help the body to cope with the intensive stress on the body. These also encourage growth. Training needs to be intense over a shorter period rather than a longer period as training for too long is catabolic. This breaks down muscle tissue. I always keep my training routine under one hour and do cardio at a different time of the day. Cardio is very important pre-contest as it burns unnecessary fatty tissue and calories.
I still eat pretty clean off-season but obviously have the occasional treat! My carbohydrates are high, protein high and fats medium-low. I still try to eat at regular intervals, normally every two hours. I also use supplements to increase calorie and protein intake for maximum growth.
My pre-contest diet is very strict and consists of high protein, medium carbohydrates, and low fats. I eat every two hours and rely a lot more on supplements to optimise protein levels and prevent catabolic effects that can occur with a strict diet.
Bodybuilding is the best way of letting out stress. It makes me feel great after a hard training session. It also keeps routine in my life, which I need.
I would like the sport to become more about the physique than the size of the physique. I prefer small waists to the blocky waists that we often see these days, and I prefer the more aesthetic physiques that were around in the 70s and 80s.
My wife is very supportive and encouraging with my interest and willingness to achieve in bodybuilding. My friends all respect and encourage me for what I have so far achieved. I respect them for being so supportive.
